Tony Award®-winning director and choreographer Jerry Mitchell (from Kinky Boots, La Cage aux Folles, and Hairspray) is bringing Fleischer Studios’ Queen of the Screen to the stage with esteemed multiple-time Grammy® Award-winning composer David Foster (the mastermind behind “I Have Nothing,” “After the Love Is Gone,” and “The Prayer”), Tony-nominated lyricist Susan Birkenhead (from Working and Jelly’s Last Jam), as well as the talented Tony-winning bookwriter Bob Martin (from The Drowsy Chaperone and The Prom).

The Betty Boop Musical Tickets

Synopsis

This brand new musical brings the iconic Betty Boop cartoon character to life in a way that is both nostalgic and contemporary. While this broadway production boasts stunning costume and scenic design, the story follows the 1930s cartoon character as she dreams of leaving the cold, grey, two-dimensional world of her classic cartoon. Betty’s stardom and success have become so unbearable that she begs her inventor grandpa, who is lovingly known as “Gramps,” to send her to the modern and vibrant 3D universe. While Gramps refuses, Betty takes his interdimensional machine to get transported to the present day. In New York, Betty meets Trisha (a Betty Boop enthusiast), Trisha’s brother, and her love interest Dwayne. Together, they explore the jazzy liveliness of the city.

Creative Team

BOOP! The Betty Boop Musical is helmed by Tony Award-winning director and choreographer Jerry Mitchell (from Kinky Boots, La Cages aux Folles, and Hairspray). He said, “Creating a new Broadway musical is such a gift. It is a special joy to be working on BOOP! in Chicago, so close to my hometown, at the very theatre where I first fell in love with musicals when I saw A Chorus Line there back in 1978.

“David Foster and Susan Birkenhead have created a first-class score to frame Bob Martin’s touching tale about an icon, Betty Boop and her indomitable spirit in this Jazz Hot love story. BOOP! is for everybody. I promise the entire family will be singing and dancing as they walk up the aisle.”

The creative team also includes the incredibly talented set designer David Rockwell, costume designer Gregg Barnes, lighting designer Philip S. Rosenberg, sound designer Gareth Owen, projection designer Finn Ross, as well as musical supervisor and arranger Daryl Waters.

History and Awards

Betty Boop is an iconic cartoon character, which was inspired by Black jazz singer, Esther Jones, in Harlem. Introduced to television in 1930 by cartoonist Max Fleischer, the caricature of the jazz age flapper was the first and most iconic sex symbol in animation. While the idea for the musical first arose in 2004, the musical premiered at the CIBC Theatre in Chicago in November 2023. BOOP! The Betty Boop Musical is transferring to Broadway’s Broadhurst Theatre this year, with previews on 11 March and an open date scheduled for 5 April 2025.

“The production’s design is striking. The transition from black and white while in the two-dimensional world to color when entering the modern world is executed with great finesse.  Black-and-white flattened projections, inspired by the 1930s Betty Boop cartoons, create a magical effect that presents as uncanny and paper-like. The set serves as a testament to the dedication of the creative vision behind the show and greatly enhances the worldbuilding. Another unique element in this musical was the use of a puppeteer for Betty’s dog, which is a clever solution to the challenge of having animals on stage. The puppeteering was skillfully done, adding a whimsical quality to the production. Musically, the show is a delight, especially for fans of jazz. The tunes are reminiscent of classic jazz standards, echoing the sounds of old Broadway musicals. These numbers are not only pleasing to the ear but could easily stand alone” – Chicago Maroon
